The next generation of compact sedans is real, and it’s spectacular.  A week after sharing the initial images of the 2025 Kia K4, the full package was on display yesterday at the New York International Auto Show. The K4 is both a refinement of Kia’s compact sedan philosophy and a complete evolution of it. Replacing the outgoing Kia Forte, the K4 will retain its predecessor’s modest price tag and stellar performance specs. But from a design standpoint, this four-door with fastback styling has an eye on the future. And in a surprising development, Kia also introduced a five-door hatchback variant.  We couldn’t be more excited for this next stage of Kia’s future here at Raceway Kia of Freehold. Today, let’s look at how the K4 got here and what it has in store.

The Road to the K4

Eyebrows were first raised when Kia confirmed the Kia Rio wouldn’t be making a comeback on American shores – despite the market’s growing need for smaller, cheaper sedans. Those suspicions were confirmed when Kia hinted that a “next generation compact sedan” was imminent – but would be a different vehicle than the best-selling Kia Forte.  Indeed, the Rio remains out and the Forte is soon to join its sedan sibling on the shelf. In their place is the K4, a boldly ambitious, redesigned four-door sedan that serves as a gateway into the future of automotive excellence. With the surprise announcement of its hatchback variant, the K4 is looking to cement a reputation as the perfect vehicle for trips of all lengths, be it your daily commute or a trek up Route 9 towards Old Bridge.  [caption id="attachment_17080" align="aligncenter" width="980"] The K4's hatchback variant.[/caption]

Pretzel Logic

Kia has labeled the K4’s exterior design philosophy as “Twist Logic” (not to be confused with any Steely Dan hits, one would assume). The goal behind Twist Logic is to create “a modern and unique body shape by twisting the connections of logically aligned squares in a seemingly illogical fashion.”   Mission accomplished with the K4, which boasts T-shaped headlights that link to a thin rectangular grille, culminating in a short point above the front wheel arch. It adopts a sloping fastback-style roofline, not unlike the midsize K5 sedan. In the back, the L-shaped taillights are connected across the width of the trunk, while a sporty diffuser has been added beneath the bumper. Altogether, the sedan’s sinuous Twist Logic approach creates a futuristic mystique.  The K4 is expected to hit U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2024 and offer five trim levels: LX, LXS, EX, GT-Line, and GT-Line Turbo. The lower trims use the same powertrain as the Forte: a 147-hp 2.0-liter inline-four, with a continuously variable automatic transmission, producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque. But the K4 is an overall larger vehicle than the Forte, measuring in at three inches lengthier and two inches wider. The increase in size contributes to the expanded 38 inches of leg room and 37.3 inches of head room in the cabin.

Interior Style Redefined

The driver-focused cabin promises a fusion of technology, colors, and the latest in cabin essentials. A plethora of new, luxurious interior outfits are available, including Medium Gray, Slate Green, Canyon Brown, and Onyx Black colorways. There’s a shared screen between front-seat occupants on the dashboard, with a select set of physical control buttons for main screen menus and air conditioning.  The K4’s list of advanced drive assistance features has expanded upon what the Forte offered. Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Smart Cruise Control are standard, while the following are available:
  • Evasive Steering Assist
  • Surround-View Monitoring
  • Parking Distance Warning
  • Highway Driving Assist
Meanwhile, GT-Line models get standard Blind Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and additional Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist and Blind-Spot View Monitor features are available.
