A silver 2019 Kia Niro, which will look similar to the 2020, is facing left.

The 2019 Kia Niro is a compact-crossover SUV built for the modern-day family—with a powertrain option for every family’s needs. Whether you are looking for a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle, the Niro has you covered. Priced competitively and with incredible fuel efficiency for all three models, the Niro is as eco-friendly as it is budget-friendly. It doesn’t hurt that its attractive design is at once rugged and sporty, so no matter the aesthetic differences your family may have, you are all sure to agree on the Niro. Now, the 2020 Kia Niro is set to be released, and it's going to be better than ever.

One of Kia’s trademarks is its emphasis on luxury amenities, and the 2020 Kia Niro will not disappoint. The 2019 Niro features one of the finest interiors in its class, with high-quality materials and an intuitive layout. You will appreciate the comfortable seats and two-zone automatic climate control, while your kids will appreciate the excellent rear-seat headroom and legroom. Backed by one of the best warranties in its class, you have the makings of the perfect family vehicle.

Kia continues to redefine the auto industry with its blend of style and luxury leading the revolution. The Niro further establishes Kia as a segment-busting brand out to change our expectations of luxury and style. It’s clear that the Niro is serious competition for all models in its segment, such as the Toyota Prius because it looks like the Niro is about to take over the segment. With similar fuel efficiency and more power and passenger and cargo space than the Prius, the Niro is positioned to take over the segment.

What’s new for 2020? The 2019 model year saw the introduction of the all-electric EV model, which was an exciting addition to the lineup. For the 2020 model year, the refresh includes fun exterior and interior enhancements for the hybrid models. New 16 and 18-inch wheel designs are available; an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is now standard, and a 10.3-inch unit is optional. New headlights, LED running lights, and much more! We are thrilled to be able to share all of the exciting features of the 2020 Kia Niro.

  • Performance

A red 2020 Kia Niro is driving on a tree-lined street near Freehold, NJ.

With so many options to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start with the 2020 Kia Niro. So let’s take a look at what option might best suit your needs. All options should offer excellent fuel economy and feature sporty performance manners if 2019 is any indication of the future. From a powerful hybrid engine to an all-electric motor that boasts 239 miles of range, the Niro has something for every eco-friendly consumer.

    First Engine Offering

The first engine option is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that includes a 43-hp tractive motor. Together, the engines produce 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. With this gas/electric engine, you can expect up to 52/46 mpg, and you can expect to feel good about saving the environment, too. What’s special about this engine is that you do not sacrifice performance for fuel-efficiency. With 195 lb-ft of torque, you will jump off the starting line—with a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds. The future of family cars is already here.

We thought we should mention one of our favorite features of the Kia Niro. There is an option to put the Niro in Sport Mode, which gives you the opportunity for even more power when you need it. This comes in handy when you need the extra acceleration. It improves throttle response, firms up the steering, and quickens the transmission’s shift points. It also keeps the engine engaged longer, which allows for sudden bursts of power.

    Second Engine Offering

The second engine option uses the same basic powertrain as the hybrid but adds up to 26 miles of all-electric operation. This gives you the ability to drive to town or to the store without having to worry about stopping at the gas station. If you do need to drive over 26 miles, you can expect stellar fuel efficiency at 48 mpg/44 mpg/105 MPGe. While the horsepower and torque ratings are relatively low, this engine still has a lot of sportiness and is aided by the Sport Mode.

    The Niro EV

The all-electric option was new for the 2019 model year and features 201 horsepower combined with 291 lb-ft of torque. With a range of 239 miles, this is an exciting addition to the lineup. Now you have the option to choose an all-electric power source while still getting exceptional power from your engine. With 291 lb-ft of torque, you will not be disappointed with how this EV crossover moves off the line. It’s even faster than the hybrid option with a 7.8-second 0-60 mph time.

Speaking of fast, the Niro EV can be charged with a DC fast charger up to 80 percent in only 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • Safety and Warranty

A red 2020 Kia Niro is shown from the side.

The Kia Niro has always been known to have many safety options and available driver-assist features, and this does not change for the 2020 model year. In fact, expect even more options. New for the 2020 model year is Lane-Following and Lane-Keeping Assist as well as High-Beam Assist. Adding these to an already impressive group of driver assists and family-oriented safety features makes this one of the safest vehicles on the road.

    Award-Winning Safety Features

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Niro a Top Safety Pick+ designation, which shows just how family-focused the Niro is. With so many options available, there seems to be no limit to the number of safety features available for the Niro. Features include automated emergency braking, available blind-spot monitoring, and available adaptive cruise control—and that’s just getting started.

Other features include blind-spot detection, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and smart cruise control. One of our favorite features is Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Sensors in the rear bumper scan behind the car, so that the system alerts the driver of vehicles approaching from the side out of the driver’s line of sight.

    Kia's Superb Warranty

It’s worth mentioning Kia’s warranty because there are not many manufacturers who offer a warranty like this. It is one of the most comprehensive warranties you can find. First, there’s the ten-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which is impressive enough and certainly brings the peace of mind you and your family look for when buying a new vehicle.

But Kia does not stop there. There is also a limited warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. Hybrid components are also covered under warranty for ten years or 100,000 miles. Yes, these are all industry-leading numbers. It’s important to note that the warranties Kia offers are almost twice the industry standard. And the length of the warranties shows just how confident Kia is in standing behind its vehicles. This reflects the Niro’s build quality, which should give all Kia owners confidence when spending their hard-earned money on a new vehicle.

  • Technology

    The Niro's Infotainment System

Kia is known for its simple and intuitive infotainment system, and the Niro is another great example of this useful approach to technology. The screen uses a touchscreen with hard buttons to supplement the controls. You’ll find smartphone connectivity and SiriusXM compatibility standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard.

Optional is a navigation system that uses GPS data to predict energy demands. This is a neat feature that will save up energy in the battery if it anticipates a hill climb for example or another fuel-sapping stretch of road ahead.

    Standard Features

Other standard on-board tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen, four speakers, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Available features include a sunroof, push-button start, wireless device charging, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, and an additional USB port.

Discerning shoppers will appreciate the user-friendly infotainment system. It is one of the easier systems to learn, and the touchscreen is responsive.
