There is something extraordinary about the versatility of a well-built sport utility vehicle. It gives you the roominess of a minivan, the power to tow and carry cargo like a pickup truck, and the luxury and drivability of a sedan. In addition, many SUVs feature the ability to go off-road, which can be a lot of fun during a camping trip or another outdoor vacation. Once the choice has been made to get an SUV, though, there are still many decisions to make. Like, what size SUV does one need? In many cases, the answer is a three-row SUV as they offer ample passenger and cargo space, and Kia offers two: The Sorento and the Telluride. And in comparing the 2020 Kia Sorento vs 2020 Kia Telluride, you will notice that the two models have a great deal in common.

In addition to three rows of seating and awesome sporty styling, these vehicles are both front-wheel drive standard, with all-wheel drive available as an extra option. Each features Kia’s infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The 2020 Kia Sorento has a 7-inch touchscreen while the 2020 Kia Telluride has an 8-inch touchscreen on all models except for the top-of-the-line SX with a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Both the Sorento and Telluride have also been rated to be able to tow up to 5,000 pounds of trailer. Nevertheless, there are a number of crucial differences between the 2020 Kia Sorento and the 2020 Kia Telluride that you should be aware of to help you make a more informed decision when deciding between the two vehicles.

  • Performance

A red 2020 Kia Sorento is towing a small camper on a winding, narrow road near Freehold, NJ.

Crucial to an SUV choice is the way the vehicle performs. Most people who are in the market for an SUV need something that is strong and easily driveable. Both of these vehicles offer a great mixture of this strength and drivability, with great engine and transmission options, along with other special driving features.

    A Look at Engine Options

The 2020 Kia Sorento features two engine options. The first is a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve I-4 gas engine that produces 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. This is featured on the Sorento L and LX models. And the second engine is a 3.3-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 gas engine that produces 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard on the SV6, EX, and SX trims on the Sorento.

The 2020 Kia Telluride has only one engine option. Every trim features a 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC 24-valve V6 gas engine that produces 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. So while there is only one choice, the one is powerful. And this power makes up for the slightly higher price tag on entry-level trims.

    The Different Transmissions

Like engines, there are two transmissions available on the 2020 Kia Sorento. The L and LX with the I-4 gas engine have a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the SV6, EX, and SX have an 8-speed automatic transmission for its V6 gas engine. All 2020 Kia Telluride models have an 8-speed automatic transmission. Drivers will find the 8-speed automatic transmission gives them more control and is more responsive than the 6-speed automatic transmission on the Sorento L and LX. So, again, the better transmission comes standard on the Telluride as it starts at a higher price.

    Drivability Features

Both the Sorento and Telluride have excellent handling. The all-wheel drive models will give you better traction than front-wheel drive models in the rain, sleet, and snow, but this comes at the expense of fuel economy. The Telluride is a larger SUV, so it can be more a challenge to handle for some drivers. The Sorento L and LX have 17-inch alloy wheels compared to the 19-inch alloy wheels on the Sorento SV6, EX, and SX. As a result, you will find the latter trims will provide a smoother overall ride. Similarly, the Telluride S and SX feature 20-inch alloy wheels as compared to the 18-inch alloy wheels on the LX and EX, providing those with more traction. As far as these features go, it is up to the driver to decide what they want and need.

  • Trims

The first thing to look at when comparing two vehicles is the price - followed closely by the trims that are offered. It is important to look at these two pieces of the puzzle as they allow you to figure out which vehicle better suits your budget and desires. In this case, both of these midsize three-row SUVs are very affordably priced; however, the Sorento comes in a bit lower.

    The Sorento's Pricing and Trims

The base trim 2020 Kia Sorento L has an MSRP of $26,990, and there are four other trims available. The next trim is the LX with an MSRP of $28,090, which adds a number of safety features. The Sorento SV6 has a larger engine and an MSRP of $33,190. The Sorento EX has a full complement of Kia Drive Wise active safety features and an MSRP of $35,490. And lastly, the top trim is the SX, with an MSRP of $40,090. Overall, there are quite a few options, and they are all reasonably affordable.

    A Telluride Overview

There are four trims available on the 2020 Kia Telluride. The base is the Telluride LX with an MSRP of $31,890. Despite being the base model, it has a great many Kia Drive Wise active safety features. The Telluride S has an MSRP of $34,290, followed by the EX with an MSRP of $37,290. The top-of-the-line trim is the Telluride SX with an MSRP of $41,790.

As you can see, the Telluride only has four trims in comparison to the Sorento's five, which allows you to get behind the wheel of a 2020 Kia Sorento L for the least amount of money. However, the Telluride does offer more features on lower trims, so it is all about each individual's budget and wants.

  • Interior

The black interior of a 2020 Kia Sorento is shown, which is similar when comparing the 2020 Kia Sorento vs 2020 Kia Telluride.

A major reason to buy an SUV is the space these vehicles provide. Whether one needs a large vehicle to drive the entire family around town, or to fit all of their camping gear, space is important. And while both of these vehicles offer ample space for both, the Telluride does offer quite a bit more.

    Room For Passengers

The 2020 Kia Sorento features 154.2 cu.ft of passenger space with room for up to seven passengers. The roomy interior provides 39.5 inches of headroom, 44.1 inches of legroom, 59.1 inches of shoulder room, and 56.7 inches of hip room for front-seat passengers. Second-row passengers will enjoy 39.3 inches of headroom, 39.4 inches of legroom, 58 inches of shoulder room, and 56.4 inches of hip room, while third-row passengers have 36.3 inches of headroom, 31.7 inches of legroom, 52.8 inches of shoulder room, and 41.4 inches of hip room. This is plenty of space, even for long road trips.

However, if you want more space, the 2020 Kia Telluride provides it with 178.1 cu.ft. of passenger space and room for eight. This spacious vehicle offers 40.9 inches of headroom, 41.4 inches of legroom, 61.6 inches of shoulder room, and 58.9 inches of hip room for front-seat passengers. The passengers in the rear two rows will be able to stretch during long rides, with the second-row passengers receiving 40.2 inches of headroom, 42.4 inches of legroom, 61.2 inches of shoulder room, and 58 inches of hip room, and third-row passengers enjoying 38.1 inches of headroom, 31.4 inches of legroom, 55.3 inches of shoulder room, and 43.7 inches of hip room. So, overall, if you need room for eight, or desire extra comfort space, the Telluride is likely the right choice.

    Space For Cargo

As for cargo, each of these SUVs has efficiently used the space. The 2020 Kia Sorento has 11.3 cu.ft. of cargo space in its trunk. This expands to 38 cu.ft. with the third row of seats folded down, and an incredible 73 cu.ft. of space with both the second and third row of seats folded down. On the other hand, the 2020 Kia Telluride provides an even more substantial amount of cargo space. The trunk has 21 cu.ft. of cargo space in the Telluride, which expands to 46 cu.ft. with the third-row seats folded down. And if you have an exceptionally large cargo haul, the space increases to a full 87 cu.ft. with both the second and third rows folded down. This means that if you need extra space, the Telluride is best, but otherwise, the Sorento might be better, as it is a more affordable option.
