Safety & Emissions Testing Service

Kia Safety & Emission Testing in New Jersey

Kia owners that reside in the Jackson, Old Bridge Township, and Middletown, NJ are required to have their vehicles inspected once every two years, except for new vehicles which require a five-year inspection to be completed. Driving a vehicle creates pollutants that can be harmful to the environment, negatively contribute to air quality and increase your carbon footprint. The purpose of an emissions test is to perform a check on hazardous materials levels that may be escaping from the vehicle as it is driven. These tests are completed in an effort to reduce the number of emissions and pollutants released by vehicles by identifying those in need of attention and repair.

Safety & Emissions Testing

The Purpose of an Emissions Test

Modern-day vehicles are gasoline-powered and actively contribute to environmental pollutants such as smog and ground-level ozone. Emission testing ensures the emissions control equipment is functioning properly. If an issue is discovered during testing, the certified service technician will make recommendations for the appropriate repairs.

What Occurs During Emissions Testing?

When you bring your vehicle for required emission testing at Raceway Kia of Freehold, our certified technician will perform a gas cap pressure check to verify the gas cap is working to effectively prevent fuel vapors from escaping.

A procedure commonly known as they onboard diagnostic test (OBD II) attaches to the on-board computer of your vehicle using a scanner in order to check for malfunctions in emissions equipment. A Single Idle Speed (BAR 90) test is typically completed on older vehicles from 1976 to 1980 model years and uses a probe made of metal that is placed on the inside of the tailpipe of the vehicle as it is placed on idle in order to collect samples of the stream of exhaust that is produced. The purpose of the probe is to measure vehicle emissions and verify no leaks are present.

Vehicles with model years ranging from 1981 through 1995 or higher will undergo an Inspection and Maintenance (I/M 93) test. This test involves placing the vehicle onto a dynamometer which simulates a vehicle driving on the road. This test will then capture and conduct an analysis of the effectiveness of the emissions control equipment on the vehicle and will also determine if leaks are present and if the brakes are functioning properly.
