How Does the Cooling System Work?

The combustion that powers your engine is incredibly hot — hot enough to warp the metal of the engine. That’s where the cooling system comes in. Once the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat releases coolant fluid into the system. This fluid picks up excess heat from the engine as it is moved through coolant lines by the water pump. It then goes to the radiator, where it is cooled down by a combination of airflow and greater surface area. While your vehicle is moving, the airflow created by motion helps cool down the coolant; while you’re at a standstill, the radiator fan kicks on and helps cool it down. Once the coolant has been sufficiently cooled, it moves away from the radiator by way of coolant lines, ready to begin the process again.
