2020 Kia Telluride vs Hyundai Palisade

Don’t be surprised if you’ve never heard of either of these vehicles. Both the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are new to their respective lineups. The Telluride is the largest Kia ever manufactured, built from the ground up and debuting in 2020. Also hitting dealerships next year is the Palisade, which is a rebranding of the familiar Santa Fe XL. In many ways, the Telluride and Palisade are incredibly similar, down to the exterior dimensions and the number of seats, but there are differences. Which of these large 3-row crossover SUVs is better?

Exterior Styling: 2020 Kia Telluride

We give full marks for the Telluride for a unique look. With a nose like a pony car’s, a dramatically sweeping windshield, an SUV-style roofline, and a chunky rear that ends with an optional power hands-free liftgate, the Telluride stands out in a crowded field of SUVs. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Palisade is, well, big. The grille is reminiscent of a heavy duty pickup truck–get ready to feel dwarfed as you walk around it. Though the Telluride and Palisade have almost the same dimensions, the Telluride hides the girth while the Palisade lets it all hang out.

Interior Space: 2020 Kia Telluride

As we’ve said, the Telluride and Palisade have very similar exterior dimensions because they have a lot in common under the skin. Still, the Telluride makes better use of the space inside and, therefore, wins out in this competition. Specifically, the Kia SUV has more third-row head room and an extra 3 cubic feet of storage behind the back seat. Take a look at the Telluride’s silhouette and you’ll see why. The end of the vehicle comes down at almost a right angle, creating both a crisp look and a little extra room in the back.

That leaves the Palisade with a chunkier-looking grille and an overall larger look, but just 18 cubic feet of storage behind the third row. Luckily for us, both the Telluride and Palisade have a seriously impressive seat-folding system. The second seat folds down with the touch of a button, making access to the third row as easy as changing a TV channel.

Standard Tech: 2020 Kia Telluride

There’s slightly more standard technology in the Telluride than the Palisade. Both come standard with an 8-inch touch screen display, second-row USB charging ports, and one-touch 3rd row access. But the Telluride also offers standard third-row USB charging, smart key with push-button start, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. There’s no word out on the Hyundai Palisade’s pricing, but unless it’s significantly lower than the Telluride’s starting price of $31,700, the Telluride offers better value.

In so many ways, the Telluride and Palisade are the same. Same frame, seating, engine, towing capacity, exterior dimensions, optional features like hands-free liftgate and head-up display, and more. But the differences are there and everywhere we see those differences, the Kia Telluride comes out on top.
