Drivers love mid-size crossover SUVs like the 2017 Kia Sorento and Nissan Murano, because they double down on family-friendly passenger space and adventure-ready utility. Before you decide which model is right for you, consult our comparison guide to learn more about these crossovers’ tech lineups and overall performance.

Interior Comfort

In the Murano, you can head into the sunset totally enveloped in style. The Zero Gravity front seats offer nothing short of class-leading comfort, and they make a great pick for commuters. Rear seats are also accommodating. They provide generous head and leg room, so your kids can grow as tall as they like and still travel comfortably.

The 2017 Kia Sorento impresses with its upscale, richly textured cabin materials. Although it’s the more affordable of the two models, you’d never know it by glimpsing this stylish cabin. Both rows provide generous head and leg room – and you can even add a third-row seat if you’ve got an especially big family. However, if you are shopping for a three-row crossover, the Sorento isn’t as spacious as some.

Technology

With the Sorento’s Uvo infotainment system, staying connected is a no-brainer. Once you link your smartphone to the central system, it does all the heavy lifting for you. Use it to make hands-free calls or stream music from devices. The system’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities even display apps like Maps and Music directly on your touchscreen, so there’s no need to pick up your phone.

The Nissan Murano offers NissanConnect infotainment, which includes a crisp, responsive touchscreen that makes it easy to interact with the system. While iPhone users can use Apple CarPlay to display their phone’s apps on the central touchscreen, Nissan has yet to offer Android Auto connectivity.

Safety

With the Sorento, it’s safety first. In government crash tests, this sporty crossover earned a perfect five-star rating for overall protection. Almost all Sorento trim models come standard with Uvo eServices emergency telematics, which provide a quick fix when you need on-demand roadside assistance or post-collision emergency services.

Like the Sorento, the Murano offers a range of high-tech driver aids. Its forward collision warning system includes emergency braking, which makes an effort to pull you up short of danger. There’s just one catch – you can only add these features if you first purchase the top-trim Murano Platinum and then add a Technology package. In contrast, you can add these features to the mid-grade Sorento LX and up.

Fuel Economy & Performance

The Sorento is quick to accelerate, but it also makes the most of what you spend at the pump, earning up to 21 city/28 highway mpg. With this crossover, you also get a smooth ride and even a sense of sophistication. You might as well be cruising in a luxury crossover – though without having to pay the premium price for one.

The Nissan Murano, too, earns up to 21/28 mpg. Its continuously variable transmission does a great job of combining highway-merging speed with thrifty fuel economy. However, the Murano only tows up to 1,500 pounds (the Sorento can tow 5,000 pounds max), so it might not be the right choice for boat owners.

In the Nissan Murano, the front seats are certainly heavenly. However, the 2017 Kia Sorento is a better big-picture option, offering everything from family-friendly comfort to world-class passenger safety. We recommend the mid-size crossover that gives you more for your money–the 2017 Kia Sorento.
